How to Develop a Positive Mindset in Children

HOW TO DEVELOP A POSITIVE MINDSET IN CHILDREN
By Vikas Malkani, Founder of SoulKids, www.soulkids.org
4
th June 2018

"Every child is born with a mind. No child is born with a mind-set " – Vikas Malkani

A positive mind-set doesn’t develop on its own, it must be created consciously.

At SoulKids we live with the understanding that every child is born with a mind, but not a mindset. This means that every child comes equipped with all the tools needed for perception and comprehension, but this still needs to be developed into a mindset that is either helpful or harmful. And that is the job of parents and teachers.

The greatest tool you can help your child create, is a positive mindset which also contains a strong and positive sense of self-esteem.

In my research I have found that the 2 important things we all seek in life are Happiness and Success, and that both of them are easier attained when one has a positive mindset and a strong self-confidence and self-esteem.

A positive mindset, once developed, will serve your child for the future and will help them to create happiness and success as they grow.

At SoulKids, we specialize in teaching children essential life skills through the use of wisdom stories, leadership games, teamwork skills, and lesson-based experiential learning, amongst other teaching tools.

SoulKids is highly effective in training children to create a positive mindset, raising children’s self-esteem and also gives them a strong foundation upon which to build further. In fact, we have won numerous awards in recognition of this excellence.

Let me share with you 3 simple ways you can inculcate a positive mindset, self-confidence and self-esteem in your child.

1) TRAIN YOUR MIND TO FEED POSITIVE THOUGHTS - Many years ago, I wrote a life-changing story which children love:

A grandmother and her 8-year-old grandson are walking down the road when they see 2 dogs fighting. As they watch, the grandson predicts that the bigger, stronger dog will win. He is soon proved right, as the stronger, bigger dog overpowers the smaller, weaker one.

The grandmother then tells her grandson ‘Like the dogs on the street, there are 2 dogs in your mind too. These 2 dogs are also fighting because they don’t get along. The first dog is your inner positive voice that encourages you, finds the good in you and always gives you confidence. The other dog is your inner negative voice that says you are not good enough, that everywhere there are problems, and it always lowers your self-esteem.’

She reminds him that he must always remember that even in his own mind, the bigger, stronger dog will win. And that whichever dog one feeds more, always becomes bigger and wins the fight.
This story teaches us that we must feed our positive thoughts and inner voice, to make it stronger, till it becomes our mindset.

Feeding positive thoughts repeatedly trains the mindset to become more positive. And since the mind is the filter through which we see everything in this world, it creates a positive perspective on life. The results are increased happiness and easier success as the child grows into an adult.

So, start your day with your child on a positive note. Remind your child that you love them; that you will always support and guide them to happiness and success. Be the most positive person you can be with your child. Feed your positive dog and feed your child’s positive dog too.

2) HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN TO DO THINGS - At every age, there are new things for kids to learn. When a child does something new, it gets them out of their zone of comfort and into their zone of discovery and growth; it makes them grow.

Doing new things is absolutely essential for the constant development of a child and also great for building a positive mind-set.

When teaching kids how to do things, show and help them at first. Then let them do what they can, even if they make mistakes. Be sure your child has lots of opportunities to learn, try, and feel proud.

Don't make new challenges too easy — or too hard.

3) STOP NEGATIVE CRITICISM -

The messages kids hear about themselves from others easily translate into how they feel about themselves. Harsh words such as ‘You're so lazy’ are harmful, and not motivating at all. When children absorb negative messages about themselves, especially from the parents or family, they feel bad about themselves, and act accordingly.

Never belittle your child's feelings. If you get angry take a short break so you don't say anything you'll regret later. And remember, you can dislike a child's actions without disliking the child.
Words have power, so be conscious of what you speak to and around your child.

In SoulKids we believe that a positive mindset is important because when children feel good about themselves, it sets them up for success — in everything from school to friendships. A positive mindset helps children try new challenges, cope with mistakes, and try again.

In contrast, children with a negative mindset feel unsure of themselves, think others won't accept them, and have a hard time standing up for themselves. They also give up on their goals and dreams easier and are unable to persist in the achieving worthy goals.

Becoming a SoulKids Mentor was life changing

Becoming a SoulKids Mentor was life changing
By Sally Forrest
Managing Director of SoulCentre,
www.soulcentre.org
30th April 2018

Sally recently interviewed Swapna Menon to find out about her journey to become a SoulKids Mentor.
What made you decide to become SK Mentor?
I happened to glance at a SoulKids programme brochure in school and I was completely wowed by the benefits it talked about.
I decided to take the course thinking that how beautiful it would be to transform myself and others and to see children “blossom" from buds into beautiful flowers
Personally I think that the most beautiful thing one can give back to the world is to “create a difference in the lives to others”.

Did You enjoy the SoulKids Mentor training program?
Yes! Without a doubt, it was amazing.
I particularly liked the transformation I saw in myself and then in the people I interacted with.
I loved the tools and teaching techniques used and in particular the stories!
As individuals, all of us connect to stories. Our eyes and ears are totally focussed and engrossed when we listen to a great story.
The stories shared at the SoulKids Mentor training are simple, unique and life changing.
The learning is so profound.
I could grasp and connect to it really easily and it also helped to change my perspective and my attitude.
It made me realise that I am in charge of my life!
Every thought I have and every action I take brings change to me and to my life.
The most beautiful part of the programme was to watch Vikas in action as he taught the program. He has such authenticity and passion, moving from one story to another with high energy. He never tired and I was totally focussed and concentrating all the time. It was enjoyable and the time just flew by. I was mesmerised.
SoulKids Mentor training is a programme that transformed me as an individual.
Have you incorporated the teachings into your life?
Yes, I immediately incorporated the teachings.
First I changed my thoughts as I realised that as individuals we have numerous thoughts coming to us every day.
Some thoughts can be positive while some can be negative.
Of course the positive thoughts are great, however one negative thought is enough to influence our entire day and can spoil the moment.
Of course it can be a challenge to always have positive thoughts, however now I have this new awareness I am making a daily effort to keep the negative thoughts at bay.
How have you used SK with your family
Yes, I use it with my family.
I have all the SoulKids books and I read the stories to my daughter.
She loved the stories so much that she asked to attend a SoulKids program.
Every day when the opportunity arises I reiterate the learning from the stories.
There are situations when she may be impatient or may not be happy with her results.
I take situations like this as an opportunity to help her learn key life lessons from SoulKids like to “be patient” and “to not give up”
The stories of the patient spider and Bruce Lee help her to realise everyone in life goes through challenges and it enables her to focus and to be eager to change.
Every story that SoulKids teaches has invaluable life lessons that really benefit children (and adults).
Have you been involved in teaching a SoulKids program?
Yes I have and I loved every minute of it.
It is so rewarding to make a difference in the lives of others.
I am a very energetic person and I bring lots of enthusiasm and drama while narrating stories.
The children definitely enjoyed the program and certainly left happy and smiling.

Many thanks Swapna for this enlightening interview.
We wish you continued happiness and we know that each child who comes into contact with you will most certainly benefit.

SoulKids® Mentors - Beautiful Inside and Out...

We managed to sneak in a short interview with the beautiful SoulKids® Mentors while they were teaching life-skills to 13 beautiful children.

Left to Right: SoulKids® Mentors - Siok, Zoe, Kheam and Amanda
Zoe
The SoulKids® program is fun and teaches the children important life-skills that will help them in all sorts of situations, through teamwork activities. They learn how to be a good friend, to never give up and believe in themselves, among other things. Just the fact that they leave being positive and learn one or more lessons, in itself, is a fulfilling experience.

Amanda
Being a SoulKids® Mentor is an amazing and thought provoking experience. The ability to invoke story-telling techniques into learning about various aspects of self-confidence is inspiring. They learn to be passionate and creative. It also teaches children to think differently – not like anyone else. It’s wonderful to see the transformation from who they are when they enter to who they become when they leave.

Siok
Being positive is a key lesson taught at SoulKids®, as is seeing the good in yourself, focusing on your actions, being a team leader and a team follower at various times and growing your self-esteem through various engaging activities. It gives children the tools to create, a bigger, better and brighter life for themselves as well as those around them.

Kheam
The SoulKids® program gives me a chance to teach essential life-skills through story and play, to a group of wonderful, children. The experience is at times full of light bulb moments!  It teaches you to expect the unexpected and that each child is special and unique.

What lessons do children learn from SoulKids®?

They learn:

Teamwork
To be creative
To think out of the box
To be caring
To be loving and warm
To be positive
To be confident and overcome their fears
That each child is different and unique
To deal with the unexpected
How to be patient
Not to fear new things

It’s a fun and engaging workshop and it is wonderful to see the transformation in only one hour!!

Interview with SoulKids Mentor - Amanda

Q: What brought you to SoulKids®?
Amanda: About 7 years ago I saw an advert in a magazine and was very interested to become a mentor. My daughter at the time was too young for me to take time out to do the course. Finally this year she turned ten and I felt able to pursue the SoulKids® Mentor course and went ahead.

Q: How did you hear about SoulKids® weekend program?
A: It was along time ago but if I remember correctly it was through an advert in the Finder or Expat Living.

Q: What are the experiences of the Mentor Training® and the SoulKids® weekend program?
A: All positive and professional. A chance to meet with a group of wonderful individuals. The experience was at times full of light bulb moments! The SoulKids® weekend program was fun and taught the children such important life skills that will help them in all sorts of situations. Just the fact that they left being positive and learnt one or more lessons was A+++.

Q: How has SoulKids® changed you as an individual?
A: I am now able to look at nature as a teacher and use the teachings in my everyday life to help me grow. I am also able to help my family become more positive and to become the best that they can be.

Q: What was your best 'favourite lesson' from SoulKids®?
A: I really think that the lesson which I think about a lot is the donkey story. There are so many people that give up too easily in life and the donkey showed that in life that it is so important to shake it of and keep going!!!! Of course all the stories are just wonderful, such a hard task to chose one.

Q: What are your visions and dreams going forward?
A: To touch as many children or adults as I can. To help with SoulKids® going forward and be the happiest I can. To make sure I always show my beautiful daughter  how to be the best person in life she can possibly be, by me being the best ever mentor to her I can be!

Q: Anything else you want to share with our readers?
A: Please either do a mentor course or send your children on a SoulKids® weekend.
What do you have to lose? Nothing! What do you have to gain? An experience that everybody should go through. You learn essential life skills through stories and play, so simple yet so powerful!

Lessons From a Swan

It’s that wonderful time of year when many of us are blessed to take a break and go on holiday.

Vikas & Sally our SoulKids founders spent time in the Lake District in the UK and have just returned. They have shared many wonderful stories of all the animals and birds they met and some of the lessons that we can all learn from observing nature.

One beautiful encounter was with a swan on one of the lakes – look at the photo – how beautiful he is.

So what can we learn from the Swan as we go about our daily life?
Lets consider these points and apply them to our lives just for one day.

Become like the Swan and see how life changes.
If you like the changes then apply them each and every day ;)

  1. The Swan is elegant and graceful on the surface, even though he is really very busy paddling his feet under the water.
  2. The Swan is peaceful.
  3. The Swan is silent and calm and only makes a noise when really needed.
  4. The Swan gives out an energy of tranquility.
  5. The Swan is CONFIDENT – just like all those of you who have been on SoulKids.
  6. The Swan watches and learns from everything around him.
  7. Every person who comes into contact with the Swan truly admires him.
So reflect on the qualities of the Swan and apply them into your life.

Singapore is 50 on 9th August ! Happy Happy Happy Birthday!

Hey SoulKids – what an exciting time to be living in Singapore
How are you planning to celebrate the 50th Birthday?

The first suggestion we have is to give GRATITUDE to Singapore – it’s truly an amazing place to live in.

50 years ago Singapore was very different to today and it’s all down to the hard work and dedication of the founders of Singapore.

So here is a challenge to you all – do something nice to 50 random elderly Singaporeans (ideally those aged 65 and over). It’s a nice surprise and a way of saying thank-you and that we all appreciate all the work they did to make Singapore great. Talk it over with mum and dad and get the whole family involved.

Do you think you can do this? We think it will be fun.

Here are a few suggestions:
  • Give them a smile and say "thank you for making Singapore great"
  • Shake their hand or ask if you can give them a free HUG ;) Just like the ones you get on SoulKids®.
  • Write 50 creative thank you notes and give them out.
  • Offer to help them in some way – carry their shopping /clean their windows/ walk the dog etc.
  • If you have a full piggy bank – maybe you want to buy a local coffee/tea to some of the elders you meet. Or maybe give a flower or a chocolate to make them smile.
  • Tell your friends about this idea and get them to do the same! Your friends should also come on SoulKids® for their free hugs from Sally & Vikas ;)
  • Write to us and tell us what you did – take photos and feature on our upcoming blogs.

Do let us know if you are going to do this – once you shout out to the Universe that you intend to do it – then amazing things happen – so get ready!

Remember the Grand Canyon Story – what you give out comes back to you …so make it AWESOME!!!

Sally, Vikas and the whole of SoulCentre® and SoulKids® team are also going to do this – so lets together make everyone happy!

Inspiration and Insight

SoulCentre® & SoulKids® Managing Director and Co-Founder Sally Forrest was recently interviewed for FLA Malaysia Magazine.

1. What was your feeling when SoulKids won the“Licensor of the Year Award 2014”?

We were all delighted when the announcement was made.
We felt that 10 years of inspiring work had paid off.
We were very proud that all our processes, systems, training, content and results were recognized.

We knew that our vision “ to Inspire children the world over to be happy and successful in life “ and to the known as the “brand of excellence in Life-Skills for children “ was supported at the highest level by the FLA.

2. Can you name some of the factors that contributed to SoulKids' exciting growth?

SoulKids® is the brand of excellence in teaching essential life skills such as happiness, success, leadership, teamwork to name a few.
Our methodology and training content is fun and inspiring.
Children learn and apply the teachings immediately and it really makes a difference in their lives.

Parents see the difference and then want to learn the techniques themselves.
We provide support for the parents and so it’s an all-inclusive training for the family.

3. How does SoulKids stand out from the competitors?

SoulKids® offers our proprietary transformational programs that develop positive, balanced, self assured and confident children.
Children from the ages of 5.5 – 15 all benefit.

SoulKids® training is inspiring, powerful and fun.
Our highly trained Mentors walk the talk. They have undergone rigorous training with the founder himself and have applied this training in their own lives first.

SoulKids® works with small groups of children and we have strict ratios of children per Mentor. This ensures each child receives the necessary attention.
Parents are educated and supported too!
We create a community where children feel loved and connected; reunions, blogs and inspirational messages are all part of the offer.
We support the training with a professional retail offering - our range of best selling SoulKids® books, DVD’s, notebooks, badges.

SoulKids Coaches are able to offer one on one support for children

Both the founders Vikas Malkani and Sally Forrest are qualified CFE graduates.

4.Has SoulKids won other awards?

SoulKids® was recently voted best in class for life skills by Harpers Bazaar readers for the following reasons;
  1. Helping children to become more confident, empowered, happy and successful in all aspects.
  2. Teaching children how their mind works and how they are responsible for their own choices.
  3. Modules that encourage learning through actual life experiences.
  4. Fun essential Life-Skills Programs taught in a happy, safe environment, with lots of attention for each child.

5. What are some of the setbacks and challenges faced by SoulKids when starting out in licensing?
And how did it overcome them?

We always see challenges as opportunities.
One of the initial considerations was our intellectual property and how we go about protecting this in 37 countries.
Time, energy, effort and substantial investment went into securing the correct intellectual property protection.

Another consideration was how to document all the processes and systems that we have been using successfully for so many years.
Manuals, videos and training processes had to be created in a professional manner.

There is a phase in growth where you simply have to take time out to set the foundation. If you enjoy procedures and processes then this can be an exciting period, however many find it a little laborious and tedious documenting each and every aspect of the brand.
However its time well invested and necessary for future growth.

6. If you had to start over, would you do anything differently?

I think there is always a danger initially that you try and do everything yourself.
One moment you are inspiring children and parents, the next you put on the hat of an accountant, then a marketing manager, then an IT specialist…and so on.
This is natural as small companies try to keep costs down.

However on reflection I feel it would be more efficient in the long run to have key functions of the business staffed from the outset.

Invest in the best staff you possibly can find.
Do not compromise.

7. What would your advice be for someone starting in a franchise business?

First decide if it truly is your passion?
Do you think about your brand/business 24/7?
Are you totally committed to making it a success?
Are you willing to invest the time, energy, effort and finance in starting the business and in making it a success?
Are you good with people and able to manage others?
Are you able to deal with comments and advice from others?
Its exciting and fast paced and with todays technology a 24/7 operation. With this in mind are you able to balance business and your personal life?

8. Why should anyone consider a SoulKids license?

SoulKids offers a turnkey business module that works across boundaries and cultures.
Unit, area & country licenses are available.
There are multiple streams of income available.
The SoulKids programs are offered in different formats to suit different timings and client preferences.
Full day, half day, extra curricular and tuition programs are all available.
Group programs and one on one coaching are available.
The brand is IP protected
Unique retail products support the brand
Full business and communication training is offered to all licensees.
Constant R&D of training programs
Impactful branding and unique content are all part of the license.

9. What is in the pipeline for SoulKids?

Our mission is to inspire everyone we meet to be the best that they can be.
So we focus on inspiring each and every child that comes through the SoulKids program.

Our SoulKids Mentor Training program offers adults the opportunity to work with the brand and spread the message to children.
Our growth is organic; people have been so inspired by their training and have seen their own change, and they decide to take the license and spread SoulKids® through our business models.
Interested business executives are always welcomed and we are happy to discuss options to grow the brand even more.
