Last week
on my daughter’s first day in year 2 when I collected her from school she leapt
in the car beaming “I made two new friends today and one BFF!!”
A warm glow
surged through my body. That’s it. That’s all I needed to know. I didn’t care
about anything else. Nothing. All is good in the world when your child is emotionally
sound. Tomorrow that could all change. Kids can be cruel…
It doesn’t
matter how smart your children are or how well they spell or calculate numbers.
What matters is that they are thriving, confident, resilient and at peace.
As young
children parents can shield them from harm. We childproof a home, we protect
them from hurt, we are their playmates, we stop the tears, and we find a way.
But in the schoolyard we aren’t there. They’re on their own and nothing
cripples parents more than the powerlessness of their child’s emotional distress.
How would
your child fare in the face of peer group pressure?
What is
your child afraid of? Do they like themselves? Are they happy? What happens
when they lose a race? When the emotional equilibrium is unbalanced nothing
else matters. Not the tennis lessons, soccer, karate, extra tuition, ballet,
gymnastics, nothing. If your child is not coping with life then everything else
pales in significance.
Children
need to know how to navigate the ups and downs of life, how to create healthy
friendships, survive the schoolyard, the school bus, the classroom, the sports
field. Get this sorted early and they wont be buried by life’s curve balls.
SoulKids one-on-one
coaching gives children the opportunity to learn through stories and lessons
how to make sense of their world. I can give children the gift of learning how
to process what’s going on around them and what it all means. Most importantly
I teach them how much control they have in determining how enjoyable their
existence is..or isn’t.
Through
coaching I have seen first hand how their lives can change. How they can set
themselves up to thrive.
Today my
daughter has two friends and one BFF. Tomorrow who knows? Whatever happens I am
confident she will pick herself up, dust off and be ok. Can you say the same?
